Abstract
This research was a pre-experimental with a one group pretest-posttest design that aims to investigate whether there is a significant effect of mind mapping technique towards students' writing competence. The sample consisted of 32 students belonging to grade VIII B of SMP Negeri 3 Singajara that were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through pretest and posttest in the forms of essay tests, respectively, given to the students before and after treatment. The data were analyzed using a t-test employing the SPSS 22.0 program. The results of this analysis showed that the average posttest score (73.12) was higher than the average pretest score (53.62) and that the difference was significant (sig.= 0.000 < α (0.05)). In other words, it show that there was a significant effect of the mind mapping technique on the students' writing competence. Based on the finding of the study, it was suggested that junior high school teachers consider using mind map in teaching writing to their students in place of the conventional technique.
