Abstract
As a key requirement for becoming a professional worker in the tourism industry, speaking English confidently has become a crucial skill for tourism students. This research investigated the English-speaking confidence of EFL students at a vocational school in Singaraja, Bali, Indonesia. The study used a qualitative approach and a case study research design. The study involved a total of 182 participants who completed an online survey through an open-ended questionnaire. This research was followed by in-depth interviews with 14 participants to gather more detailed information. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that (1) the participants generally believed they lacked confidence speaking English. This perception was influenced by their view of English as a complex language, limited vocabulary mastery, and their inability to create effective self-learning environments; (2) there were several challenges encountered by EFL students in building their English-speaking confidence, including deficiencies in English linguistic components, fear of social judgment, and limited exposure to English; and (3) the solutions to overcome their challenges in building speaking confidence were engaging in supportive environments, developing disciplined self-learning habits, and visiting tourist areas to practice communication with native speakers. These findings prompt discussions and implications for adjusting English education to be more adaptive and aligned with the characteristics of current students.
