Abstract

This study aims to identify the use of stories in the learning process to improve student literacy. This study used an explanatory sequential mixed method combining quantitative and qualitative analysis. The researchers prepared instruments in readiness and perception questionnaires for quantitative results, while for qualitative data results, researchers prepared interview questions. The samples were elementary school teachers in grades 4, 5, and 6 majoring in English in Buleleng Regency. The results showed that teacher readiness in utilizing stories to improve student literacy was very high, with a score of 43.67. In addition to the readiness aspect, three things were measured: teacher alignment, teacher capability, and teacher engagement, and the results showed that teachers got very high scores in using stories to help improve student literacy. The teacher perception aspect also showed very positive results with an average value of 23.90, which showed that in terms of behavior, emotion, and cognition, teachers could provide good examples to students to foster student enthusiasm and enthusiasm for literacy activities. Based on the findings, using stories such as short stories, narrative stories, or picture story books that are suitable with the learning material can be an effective strategy to support student literacy development, make teachers actively involve students in learning, and attract students' interest during the learning process. The suggestion from this study is that further research can be conducted by focusing on one aspect, such as one type of story, or opening a new topic by involving other samples to determine the readiness and perception of teachers.
