Abstract

This study aims to investigate and explore the use of stories in English language learning on students’ readiness and perceptions on their English literacy. This study employed explanatory sequential mixed method design using a quantitative and qualitative approach to determine how students’ readiness using English stories for their literacy and how students perceive to the use of English stories for their literacy. The researcher used a sample of students in grades 4, 5, and 6 of SD 3 Banjar Jawa and SD Lab Undiksha. The researcher also used a questionnaire and interview instrument to determine how students’ readiness and perceptions of using English stories for their literacy. The data obtained were then analyzed using descriptive statistics using the PAIT (Psychometric Analysis of Item Theory) calculation. The overall questionnaire results showed that students’ readiness in using stories for english literacy was high with a score of 72.46 seen from four dimensions, namely 1) Student Motivation, 2) Learning Style, 3) Media, and 4) Facilities. Meanwhile, the overall interview results also showed positive results in the use of English stories for literacy with a score of 22.21 from three dimensions, namely 1) Behavioral Engagement, 2) Emotional Engagement, and 3) Cognitive Engagement. Based on the findings above, students showed high readiness with their motivation to learn English at school and at home. The use of stories also gets a positive perception from students, which shows that students have a strong responsibility in learning English, students are active in discussions, participate in answering questions related to English stories, and have a high interest in using English stories for literacy. So that in the future teachers can use stories for learning English while still using stories that attract students’ interest. schools and educational institutions can apply story media in interactive way to increase student involvement and participation such as interactive e-books and others to support the learning process.
