Abstract
The development of textbooks is an important effort in improving the quality of learning, especially in the context of the General Course (MKU) of English at the Banyuwangi Marine Academy. One of the methods integrated in the development of the textbook is the Grammatica Terjemah method based on CIRC (Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition) learning. This study aims to describe the design, validity, practicality and effectiveness of textbooks that effectively use this method to improve students' reading and writing skills. The research method used in this study is Research and Development (R&D) with a development model that refers to the Borg and Gall approach. The development stages include needs analysis, planning, product development, limited trials, revisions, field trials, and final revisions. Participants in this study were 34 students from 2 study programs (27 students from the port management study program and 15 students from the logistics management study program) at the Banyuwangi Marine Academy who took the General Course in English. The results of the study indicate that the "English for Maritime" textbook for students of the Banyuwangi Maritime Academy was developed using the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) development model. The process of developing this textbook includes several important stages, namely needs analysis, design, and validation. At the needs analysis stage, researchers identified students' needs for English material for maritime. Furthermore, at the design stage, the textbook was designed by considering important aspects in learning English. The last stage is validation, where the textbook was evaluated by experts, lecturers, and students. This book received a high average score from various aspects: appearance of 94.53%, presentation of 95.47%, material of 95.20%, and language of 97.08%, with an overall average reaching 95.57%. These results indicate that the textbook has very good validity and practicality. In addition, the effectiveness analysis shows that this book obtained an average score of 90.43%, which indicates that the "English for Maritime" textbook is very effective for use in learning English at the Banyuwangi Maritime Academy, so that it can significantly improve students' English skills.
