Abstract

This study aimed to develop an English e-module for culinary students at Bali Crystal College. The development of this study applied the Research and Development method proposed by Borg and Gall (2003). Three stages were used in this study: exploration, development, and validation. The subjects of this study were two instructors and 30 culinary students. The data were collected through document analysis, interviews, and questionnaires. The instruments used to collect the data were an interview guide, a questionnaire, and an expert judgment sheet. The data of this study were analysed using Miles & Huberman (1994) for the qualitative data, and Gravetter & Wallnau (2016) for the quantitative data. The findings consisted of 1) students expect authentic material, 2) outlined communication competence in culinary context, 3) outlined the interactive material using technology, 4) outlined language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) and 9 language functions from syllabus and 7 language functions from questionnaire used in culinary department. In the development there were 12 chapters developed from the language functions. From the media expert judgments, it was found that two media experts resulted in scores of 49 (mean = 4.90) and 48 (mean = 4.80) and from two content experts obtained scores of 83 (mean = 4.88) and 84 (mean = 4.94). All average scores are above the criteria of ≥ 4.485 and are therefore categorized as excellent materials. In short, it can be concluded that the English language learning materials developed are in accordance with the needs of culinary students, relevant to the context of the culinary work world, and are considered very suitable for use based on the results of expert assessments.
