Abstract

The development of generative AI tools has increasingly influenced teaching practices, including in English teaching in higher education. While many lecturers have begun integrating generative AI into English language instruction, their level of readiness to use these technologies effectively remains underexplored, especially in the Buleleng District. Thus, this study aims to investigate s the readiness of EFL lecturers in universities in Buleleng District to use generative AI in teaching English. Using a mixed-method explanatory sequential design, quantitative data were collected through a survey of 28 lecturers using the RAIS instrument, followed by interviews with five lecturers to further explain the findings. It was found that the lecturers are ready to use generative AI. However, lecturers feel less ready when they have to face technical problems with the tools and implement ethical practices. These were due to the surface level of AI use and the limited institutional AI policy. These findings suggest that deeper pedagogical use and clearer regulatory frameworks are necessary to support responsible and effective AI implementation in higher education.
