Abstract
Anugrah, Putu Paradila Sita (2026), Students9 Learning Strategies and challenges in Developing English Reading Skills at SMPN 2 Tampaksiring. Thesis, English Language Education, Postgraduate Program, Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha. This thesis has approved and checked by the 1 st Supervisor: Dr. Ni Putu Era Marsakawati, S.Pd., M.Pd. and 2 nd Supervisor: Dr. Putu Suarcaya, S.Pd., M.Sc. Keywords: challenges EFL, junior high school students, learning strategies, reading challenges, reading skills This qualitative case study aimed to explore the learning strategies employed by eighth-grade EFL students in developing English reading skills and to identify the challenges they encountered during reading activities. The study involved 24 students of Class VIII B at SMPN 2 Tampaksiring, with eight students selected purposively for in-depth observation and interviews. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis, and were analysed using Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña9s interactive model (2014), consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings revealed that students employed cognitive, metacognitive, and socio-affective strategies, although cognitive strategies were used most frequently. The main challenges included limited vocabulary, low reading comprehension, inconsistent use of reading strategies, lack of motivation, and reading anxiety. These findings imply that explicit strategy instruction and teacher-guided reading activities are needed to support students9 reading development in EFL classrooms.
