Abstract
Student engagement is an essential factor in the success of Project-Based Learning (PjBL), particularly in English writing instruction. This research aims to analyze students9 engagement during the implementation of PjBL, identify the dominant dimension of engagement, and explore the challenges experienced by students in the writing learning process at MAN 1 Bone. This research employed a qualitative case study design involving 11th-grade students at MAN 1 Bone. Data were collected through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and documentation and analyzed using thematic analysis. The trustworthiness of the findings was established through data source and technique triangulation. The findings indicate that students demonstrated behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement throughout the implementation of PjBL. Behavioral engagement was reflected in active participation and collaboration, emotional engagement in students9 interest and enthusiasm, and cognitive engagement in idea development, problem-solving, and reflection during writing activities. The research also identified several challenges, including generating ideas, managing project tasks, collaborating effectively, and improving writing quality. This research concludes that Project-Based Learning promotes multidimensional student engagement in EFL writing while presenting several challenges that require appropriate instructional support. The findings provide practical implications for English teachers in designing engaging and meaningful project-based writing activities.
