Abstract

As a novel set on a luxury train that became the symbol of social status, Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express (1934) represents both discrimination and alienation while a group of people from different classes were united to discriminate the villain. Through interactive qualitative data analysis from Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014), the study revealed three main causes of discrimination, namely discrimination caused by characters’ origin, discrimination caused by characters’ job title, and discrimination caused by characters’ physical appearance. Discrimination caused by characters’ origin was experienced by Ratchett and Antonio Foscarelli. Discrimination caused by characters’ job title or occupation was experienced by Lieutenant Dubosc and Ratchett. Discrimination caused by characters’ physical appearance was experienced by Hercule Poirot and Ratchett. The alienation issue was experienced by one of the characters named Ratchett. It happened from his life as a criminal, a businessman, a murder of Daisy Armstrong, until his death on the train. Thus, it can be concluded that while the novel displays a more fluid relationship among members of different classes, the novel also denies permanent crossing of membership on the part of Ratchett due to his criminal record and his absence of repentance. It is implied that the change of economic condition is not enough to facilitate the change of class membership when it is not followed by good deeds.
