Abstract

The research addresses the demands of 21st-century education and the ongoing challenges faced by educators in adapting to this newly introduced curriculum. The research investigates how the implementation of Kurikulum Merdeka in English classes especially in learning strategies and assessment. The study employs a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected through document analysis, classroom observations, and interviews. The subjects were two English teachers handling fourth and fifth Grade. These teachers also function as homeroom teachers and have participated in curriculum training workshops. The research showed that teachers used Alur Tujuan Pembelajaran (ATP) to develop structured lesson plans based on students' needs. However, they acknowledged difficulties in addressing diverse student backgrounds and learning abilities. To mitigate these challenges, they employed strategies like drilling, oral repetition, and dictation to improve pronunciation and retention. Classroom observations revealed that English instruction incorporated multimodal strategies. Lessons often began with greetings and prayers, followed by vocabulary practice, pronunciation modelling, and interactive group activities. Teachers used realia like wall clocks and visual aids to contextualize time-related vocabulary. In terms of assessment, teachers adopted both formative and summative assessments. Formative assessment was carried out through daily observations, checklists, peer evaluations, and teacher feedback. Summative assessments were conducted at the end of learning cycles to evaluate overall competence.
