Abstract
This study aimed at describing 1) the challenges encountered by English teachers’ SMA Negeri 4 Singaraja and 2) the solutions from the challenges in online learning implementation during today’s unprecedented time of COVID-19. This study was qualitative research that conducted in SMA Negeri 4 Singaraja and took three English teachers of eleventh grade as the participants. Interview guide was used as the instrument and the data were collected through phone interview and validation instrument. The collected data were analyzed by Miles et al. (2014) interactive model analysis. The findings showed that the teachers’ challenges were divided into two, such as technical and instructional challenges. Technical challenges included internet connection and limited internet signal. However, instructional challenges included the effectiveness of teaching methods, appropriate assessments chosen, and students’ low motivation. Thus, to overcome the technical challenges, the teachers should call the internet provider and join another online platforms. Meanwhile, for instructional challenges, the solution were managing the time, communicating in using effective teaching methods, using authentic assessments, and always encouraging the students’ motivation. It is suggested to all English teachers to establish communication with colleagues to obtain information about effective English teaching methods during online learning implementation.
