Abstract

This study aims to investigate The Effect of ELSA Speak Application on Student Speaking Anxiety and Speaking Performance. There were 129 eleventh-grade students at SMK PGRI 2 Denpasar involved as the research population where there were only 60 students selected as research sample. It employs a Sequential Explanatory mixed-method design, starting with a quantitative phase involving pre-test, post-test, and Speaking Anxiety questionnaire analyzed using MANOVA. This is followed by qualitative phase using descriptive analysis to explore students' perceptions through interviews. Instrument validity was confirmed through expert judgment and Pearson's Product-Moment, while reliability was established using Cronbach's Alpha (0.986). The results revealed: (1) a significant simultaneous effect of ELSA Speak Application on the eleventh-grade students' Speaking Anxiety and Speaking Performance (Sig. 0.00 < 0.05); (2) a significant effect of using ELSA Speak on students' speaking anxiety; and (3) a significant effect of using ELSA Speak on students' speaking performance. The qualitative data obtained from student interviews provided a deeper understanding of students’ perceptions regarding the effectiveness of the ELSA Speak application in reducing speaking anxiety and improving speaking performance. Thus, this study revealed that ELSA Speak effectively improved students’ speaking performance while helping to reduce their speaking anxiety.
