Abstract
This study aimed to observe the implementation of Google Classroom in SMA Negeri 2 Bangli, where Google Classroom is mainly used to conduct online teaching and learning class including the teaching of English writing. The study highlighted problems experienced by teachers and students in online teaching and learning English writing skills, along with the methods and strategies they used to solve the problems. The case study used data obtained from open-ended interview with 5 English teachers and questionnaires administered to 61 Grade 10 to 12 students from 8 Science classes and 3 Social classes. This study also used a small observation on 2 online English writing sessions to support the findings. This study found that the implementation of online English writing teaching and learning via Google Classroom was going well both from the perspectives of the students and teachers. Once in a while, WhatsApp was used to supplement the Google Classroom platform for faster response from both parties. The difficulty teachers faced in integrating online writing skills in English through Google Classroom was the delay of students in submitting their assignments, which happens because of various reasons such as signal problems and student’s condition at home. The implementation of learning English writing online via Google Classroom received a positive response from students, where Google Classroom has made it easier for students to understand the material, easier to write, make them more technologically literate, and improve their English writing skills. Lastly, this research suggested that high school teachers should be more creative in building an engaging environment for students so they can take active part in online learning process, as well as in offline sessions.
