Abstract
The current study aimed at investigating the English instructional process during emergency remote teaching at SMP N 1 Sukasada, Buleleng. This study was a descriptive qualitative study framed within a RASE (Resource, Activity, Support, Evaluation) framework. The observation checklist and interview were used in this study. The observation conducted was guided by a classroom observation sheet. Meanwhile, the interview took 4 English teachers to gain deeper data on the instructional process were conducted. In analyzing the data, this study used a descriptive qualitative research design. This study found that the learning objectives were already included in the teachers' lesson plans and formulated following the guidelines provided in the curriculum and syllabus. During the instructional process, the teachers were assisted by textbooks and learning media, such as slides as resources in explaining learning materials. In terms of learning activities, teachers employed methods that emphasize activities that require students to solve problems and collaborate. Teachers also gave support to the students via WhatsApp personal and group chats to assist the students during the learning process. The teachers used a performance assessment, such as asking the students to speak and write and quiz to evaluate the learning progress. This study concluded that knowing and comprehending the flaws in the implementation of Emergency Remote Teaching would aid individuals in overcoming learning obstacles caused by technical constraints while also improving their English skills. This study suggested that teachers need to create a discussion forum among teachers so they can share and gain new insight into teaching English during emergency remote teaching.
