Abstract
The present research studied two main questions, the locutionary types and sub-types as well as the illocutionary forces expressed by the main character to her audiences in the Enola Homes Movie. In speech-act theory, a locutionary act is an act of making a meaningful utterance, as a locutionary act. Whereas, an illocutionary force refers to a speaker's intention in delivering an utterance or to the kind of illocutionary act the speaker is performing. It is also known as an illocutionary function or illocutionary point. The research subject was the movie itself, and the objects were focused on the locutionary types, subtypes and their respective functions or points. A critical analysis was applied to determine the movie’s contents relating to the locutionary acts and illocutionary points or functions. The obtained data were analyzed descriptively and categorically based on Searle’s they of speech acts. The analysis concluded that the locutionary act types were flavoured with assertives, directives, commissives, and expressives. Whereas the speech act sub-types were stating acts assertives acts, explanative acts, clarificative acts, insisting acts, claiming acts, deducing acts, boasting acts, asking acts, ordering acts, requesting acts, invitational acts, advicing acts, commanding acts, begging acts, promising acts, offering acts, threatening acts, refusing acts, vowing acts, offering acts, congratulating acts, apologizing acts, expressing acts, condoling acts, greeting acts, violating acts, deploring acts, agreeing acts, and disagreeing acts. The illocutionary forces in the movie conveyed through statement, assertion, explanation, clarification, insisting, claiming, deduction, boast, asking, order, request, invitation, advice, command, begging, promise, offer, threat, refusal, vow, offer, congratulation, apology, expressing, condolence, greeting, violation, deploration, agreement, and disagreement. The story is about the teenage sister of the already-famous Sherlock Holmes, who travels to London to find her missing mother but ends up on a thrilling adventure, pairing up with a runaway lord as they attempt to solve a mystery that threatens the entire country. The movie implies several best practices about life management.
